DEFRA Litter Forum – 10th May 2016

On June 2, 2016, in DEFRA, Legislation, Litter fines, by PeterSilverman

I took part in DEFRA’s Litter Forum on 10th May. The objective was to gather ideas to assist in their development of a national litter strategy.

DEFRA have now assembled the feedback into this document:

Litter Forum 10th May Feedback from workshops

Of the 38 recommendations I would select the following three which most resonate with me:

Move responsibility for clearing litter on trunk roads from local authorities to Highways England (it came up particularly strongly in both sessions)

Send a clearer message that enforcement/fining is appropriate for acts of littering and, as long as it is carried out sensibly, encourage local authorities to enforce against littering and dog fouling.

Local Government should use plain-clothed enforcement officers (for issuing on-the-spot fines for littering).
