Hopeless Highways England

Parish council responsible for cleaning the A1(M)! Surely not?

In January Paul Haxby registered a complaint about debris on the A1(M) between J47 and J48 in North Yorkshire via “Fix my street“.  As Highways England have the statutory duty to keep the motorways clear of litter it was passed to them.

Instead of responding directly to Mr Haxby HE chose, as they always do, to pass the job onto their contractor. Although this section of road is part of their Area 33, managed for them by Road Management Services (Darlington) Ltd, they forwarded it to their Area 12 contractor,  A-one Plus.

A-one Plus then wrote to Mr Haxby to say that, although the area was not part of their remit, its cleansing would be the responsibility of the local authority and gave him the phone number of Knaresborough Town Council, a parish council without any street cleansing responsibilities.

What a shambles.
