The A27 Campaign Group and Clean Highways have written jointly to the Secretary of State for Transport requesting that the cleansing of the A27 running along the south coast in West and East Sussex be transferred to Highways England.

The A27 Campaign have obtained the endorsements from all of the 7 councils in the two counties who currently have to clean the road – and from the MPs for Eastbourne, Lewes and Brighton Kemptow

Read the letter to Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport

We … request that you use your powers to transfer responsibility for all cleaning of the A27 to Highways England ..

The A27 is … part of the National Strategic Road Network … its prime function is to move traffic across the nation rather than to serve local interests.

… in some areas cleaning has not been undertaken for almost three years.

…… increased efficiencies would be achieved by combining all aspects of road maintenance under HE.

Specialist teams protected by blocking vehicles …… could move seamlessly from one local council area to the next without the need for liaison between different bodies with differing priorities.
