Reports from the A27 Clean Up Campaign indicate that Highways England have been strimming the verges on these roads and shredding litter in the process. These incidents were within the District of Lewes.

This came just over a month after a meeting between the DfT and Local Councils on the A27, including Lewes, which included discussions on “improved communications and collaborative working” between them and Highways England “around the management of litter”.

The subsequent communications between the M27 Clean Up Campaign and Highways England’s showed that HE’s Service Delivery Manager is under the impression that they should be collaborating with the local Highways Authority which is East Sussex Highways as opposed to Lewes District Council who have the statutory duty to keep these roads clear of litter.

I have written again today to Bernadette Kelly, the Permanent Secretary at the DfT asking here to put a stop to this nonsense saying that “the “responsibility for cleaning those trunk roads on the HE network, not already cleaned by HE, should be transferred to Highways England without further delay”.
